BOOK: Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert
Big Magic is one of those books where you take from it what you can. I definitely don't agree with everything Elizabeth Gilbert says, but I also felt like writing every time I put the book down which says something about its motivational power.
The book is written under the idea that creativity is like magic (and a little like religion). Ideas, for Gilbert, are alive and will come to you when you're in the correct state of mind to create them. If you're not, it will go on to someone else. Again, Big Magic is what you take from it, and what I took from this idea was something very specific: if you don't create something you felt you had to, it's okay - someone else will, and if you don't want to, then they'll do it better. And that is probably true, as much as ideas being alive isn't.
Maybe the best thing about this book was the motivation to find something you enjoy just because. You don't have to make money off it, you don't even have to be the best at it, it just needs to give you a sense of fulfilment.
